The reasons for the final regulatory action were relevant to: Human health Summary of known hazards and risks to human health: Acute ingestion or inhalation of ethylene dichloride causes damage to the heart, central nervous system (CNS), liver, kidneys, and lungs. Acute inhalation exposure results in clouding of the cornea, eye irritation, neurotoxicity, nephrotoxicity, hepatoxic effects, respiratory distress, cardiac arrhythmia, nausea, and vomiting. Chronic inhalation results in kidney and liver effects. Animal studies have shown a reduced ability to fight infection and have reported CNS effects following chronic ingestion of ethylene dichloride. Inhalation studies of rats reported decreased fertility, increased incidence of testicular lesions, and increased embryo mortality. Animal studies show ethylene dichloride causes a variety of tumours following ingestion, inhalation or dermal exposure. Ethylene dichloride is a probable human carcinogen.
